Since its introduction, over 1 million UK business phone numbers have been registered with the Corporate Telephone Preference Service. So if you use B2B telemarketing or sales calls to target new clients, chances are you’ll encounter CTPS registered numbers on a regular basis.
According to the CTPS, corporate subscribers can include “corporate bodies such as a limited company in the UK, a limited liability partnership in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or any partnership in Scotland.” Registration with the CTPS is also available to non profit organisations such as schools, government departments and agencies, hospitals and other public bodies. Furthermore, different departments or sections within an organisation may be registered with the CTPS whilst others are not. So checking CTPS numbers before you call really is important.
Even more so because if you call a CTPS registered number on an unsolicited basis, you’ll be in breach of the Privacy and Electronic Comunications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, which states it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to organisations thats have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls. If found to be in breach of these regulations, your business could face legal action and even a £5000 fine.
The Corporate Telephone Preference Service is operated and funded by the direct marketing industry, and regulation is overseen by the Information Commissioners Office.
