This is well ahead of general growth rates in the economy, and indicates that as a nation, increasing numbers of us are taking the plunge to be our own boss.
The findings come from research released by http://www.startupsplus.co.uk, a direct marketing tool for small businesses, which tracks the numbers of new start ups each month.
Startupsplus recorded 151,393 new businesses in 2006, compared to 137,720 startups in 2005 – an increase of 10.3%.
And as for the most popular type of business to start, pubs topped the league table once again, closely followed by hairdressers, builders, and driving schools.
All grew in popularity, but the number of new hairdressers grew by over 25% compared to the previous year.
March was one of the busiest times to start a new business in 2006, and August was one of the quietest.

Startupsplus is provided by Selectabase Ltd, independent experts in direct marketing and providers of a wide range of business and consumer lists.
